Robert Cray - University of East Anglia, Norwich, Norfolk, England - 28.07.99 I was probably the youngest person at this gig, and that's not to say that I'm young. Speaking of age, I first saw Robert Cray about 11 years ago (in the wake of his "Strong Persuader" days) and the man has not aged a bit. As I soon discovered, his voice still sounds as good as ever too. He and his band performed my personal faves, "Right Next Door", "Phone Book" and (during an encore) "Smoking Gun". "Foul Play" however, my favourite fave, did not feature in the set. Taken from his new album, "Take Your Shoes Off", Robert performed "24-7 man", "Pardon" and "That Wasn't Me". I think I would need to hear his new album a few more times to become as fond of that as I am his older material. Robert Cray was cool without trying to be. He has no self image problem and as a result, he had a completely natural rapport with his audience. Rating: **** Date of Review: 31.08.99 |
