Sarah McLachlan - Surfacing (Album)

Year of Release: 1997

There are two instantly appealing songs on here: "Building a Mystery" and "Sweet Surrender" but generally the lyrics are not very credible: "You live in a church where you sleep with voodoo dolls …" just a sample from the first-mentioned track. In contrast, the lyrics in "I Love You" tell it like it is, any imagery being sparingly and appropriately used: "It's just you and me on my island of hope … Let me surround you, a sea to your shore …" sung so softly and innocently. Innocence can't be hung on to forever though, despite what Sarah says to "Adia" and all this soul searching stuff is getting a bit stale and should stop, Sarah, before it's too late.

Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (Album)

Year of Release: 1994

I first heard this singer on Jools Holland's programme. Some months later the album featured as backing music on some episodes of "Due South". Sarah has an exquisite voice and the album is heavenly. I have difficulty picking favourite tracks as most do not disappoint but if pushed, I would say the title track and "Ice" (because the haunting effect of these really gets to your guts) are my personal faves. Lyrics are meaty and profound. There are two versions of the song "Possession" - one has heavy instrumental backing, the other surprise version has mere piano accompaniment - both are brilliant.
