Shed Seven - University of East Anglia, Norwich, Norfolk, England - 29.04.98

The band ambled casually on to the stage and without much ado, launched into "Getting Better" - the vocals could be picked out without any trouble and the lead guitar was clearly distinguishable, but this was as good as it got as far as sound quality was concerned - by the time the band performed "A Maximum High" the mixing desk boys had gone crazy, turning up the guitars to make them so loud that audibility generally became pretty poor.

Most of the set came from the "Maximum High" album but a few songs were taken from the new album, "Let it Ride" being one such song, the intro of which reminded me of Tone Loc's "Funky Cold Medina". There was not much communication between the band and the audience - there was an occasional introduction to songs and "cheers" was muttered every now and then.

After about an hour the band left the stage but then returned (having kept the audience waiting a respectable 5 minutes) and finally departed, leaving "Going for Gold" ringing in my ears. On the whole the band gave a spirited performance, but it was a shame that the sound production was not very good.
